We were asked to create a rear garden for this contemporary and newly renovated house in Queens Park, London. Cali set to work using a combination of grey coloured materials and textures, combined with pops of pinks, greens and purples in the planting. A dark grey painted block of hardwood decking was set within the smooth, contemporary sawn sandstone paving and edged with a rendered seating area. Grey-painted smooth fence panels, with a horizontal lateral trellis, provide crucial screening in addition to blocks of Fagus sylvatica hedging. We used subtle spot lighting in contrast with dramatic up-lights. The planting has a contemporary feel; Pyllostachys aurea and Stipa gigantea look striking against the grey backgrounds and under planted with the purples and reds of Nepeta ‘walkers low’, Astrantia major ‘Rubra’ and Verbena bonariensis.
